This project involved the design and construction of a Durga Puja entrance structure, created as a temporary architectural installation for a community celebration.
This entrance design is inspired by the traditional Chalchitra, a distinctive form of ritual painting from Bengal known for its semi-circular composition and dense narrative detailing.
Chalchitra is characterized by its mythological storytelling, where multiple figures, deities, and symbolic elements are arranged in a continuous visual sequence. The style uses bold outlines, flat color application, and rhythmic repetition of forms, creating a strong graphic quality that is both decorative and narrative.
In this project, I reinterpreted Chalchitra as an architectural surface, transforming its visual language into a linear frieze for the entrance structure. Instead of treating it as a background element, it becomes the first visual interaction, setting the tone for the space.
While developing this work, I tried to understand the composition logic, figure stylization, and painting techniques of Chalchitra. This process was not only about design execution but also about learning from a traditional art form and adapting it into a new spatial context.
